10th anniversary World title claimed by Team Aqua

Holding an eight point advantage going into the final day, and then doing enough to hang on, enabled Chris Bake’s Team Aqua to be crowned the 44Cup Marstrand World Champions for 2019. The team claimed this year’s title ahead of Vladimir Prosikhin’s Team Nika and Torbjörn Törnqvist’s local heroes aboard Artemis Racing. On the final day the teams had a long wait out on the water as the breeze faded, subsequently materialising just long enough to allow two races to be sailed before the 1500 cut-off.

Beach party opens the Hempel Youth Sailing World Championships

The Port of Gdynia was baked in sunshine on Sunday night as the 409 sailors from 66 nations took to the city beach for the opening ceremony of the Hempel Youth Sailing World Championships. As is tradition at the Hempel Youth Worlds, celebrating its 49th edition, each nation brought a flask of water from their home nation for the symbolic mixing of the waters ceremony, which brings all of the waters of the world together to embody sportsmanship, team spirit and unity. Founded in 1926, the Port of Gdynia was built to act as a haven for ships and the roots of the city were evident throughout the theme of the evening. The stage was set up to resemble a ship and each nation was welcomed up to the stage to pour their water in a specially designed container before it was poured into Gdansk Bay.

Tensions run high during Optimist Worlds final day of qualifiers

Competition was fierce on the water on Wednesday as the young sailors stepped up their game during the third and final day of qualifying races in the 2019 Optimist World Championship. Complex wind conditions caused some difficulty for Richard, enabling Marco – two-time defending world champion – to get ahead. "Today was much trickier because the wind was coming off the rocks and was very patchy so I was not consistent, but I think I am still looking strong," second-placed Richard said. Ireland’s Rocco Wright, who turns 13 on July 28, was one of Tuesday’s eight winners, stomping home to victory in the green fleet in race six, the last of the qualifiers.

Australia's Tom Burton wins 2019 Laser Standard title

After the two final races, held in perfect 10 to 12-knot winds, Tom Burton (AUS) held on to his overnight lead to become the 2019 Laser Standard Men’s World Champion. Going into the day with an 18-point lead, it was essentially up to Burton to avoid making a critical error on the final day when each of his nearest rivals already had to discard a high score. In the day’s first race, Burton sailed a conservative race to finish 14th, a score that then became his discard. The pressure was off a bit after Jean-Baptiste Bernaz of France, who was in second place going into the day posted an eight place finish. Burton was also helped by Germany’s Philip Buhl who scored a Black Flag disqualification for being over the starting line early. Buhl’s Black Flag pushed New Zealander’s Sam Meech and George Gautry in to first and second for the race and secured their spot near the top of the leaderboard.
